American Society of Plant Taxonomists (ASPT)

The American Society of Plant Taxonomists promotes the field o f systematic botany through
education. traini ng. and public dissemination of original researc h on pl ants. Organized in 1935 . the
Soc iety has a membership of approximately I l00. Information about dues. activities. and publications is
avai lab le at the ASPT headquaners during the meeting and may be found at the ASPT website
(www .aspt.net) or obtained from the ASPT Business Office (aspt@-uwyo.edu).
T he Socie ty publishes Sysll'IIWiic Boumy. a quarterly journal that is included with the
membe rship dues. A basic subscription includes onli ne access to the journ al through lngenta. T he print
copy is ava ilable for an additional fee . ASPT also publishes Sy.wem(llic Bow ny Monographs at irregular
intervals: ind ividua l or standing orders are ava ilable . Past issues of the j ournal and monographs are also
avai lable through JSTO R with a five -year moving wall . Abstracts of papers presented at the annual
meeting are published with those of the Botanical Society of America a nd a re availab le onli ne ;md at the
meeting .
The Society sponsors an extensive . annual competitio n for research grants for graduate student
invest igators . Suppon is :l\'ailable for students (both master's and doctoral levels) conducting fieldwork.
herbarium traveL andior laboratory research in any area of plant sy~temat ics . T he Soc iety also prov ides
grants each year for student trave l to the annual meeting and addit iona l financial support to students
participating in fie ld trips.
The ASPT has initiated a new Undergraduate Research Prize where up to three prizes may be
awarded euch year for an out~tand i ng. independent research project in plant systemat ics completed by an
undergraduate student w ithin the last two years. The 201 4 VRP w in ner was Gaurav Kandl ikar.

The Innovations in Plant Systematics Education Prize is a new pr ize given by the Society and
awarded to an educator who has developed novel and innovative resources for teaching plant systematics
to undergraduate and/or graduate students. T he 201 4 IPSEP winner w as Chris Ma11ine. Bucknell
University. T he 2015 winners for the URP and IPSEP prize~ will be announced at Botany 2015.
The George R. Cooley Award is given for the outstanding contributed paper pre~entcd by a
young professional at the annual meet ing. T he 2014 winner was Ryan Fo lk. T he Ohio State University .
The Peter H . Raven Scientific Outreach Award may be bestowed annually by the Society upon a
plant systematist for exceptional outreach activities that advance the public"s understanding of plant
systematics . In 2014. the award was presented to Dr. Ken Cameron.
The a nnual A sa Gray A ward honors individuals for outstanding accomplishments pertinent to the
goals of the S ociety. Dr. Alan R. Smith was the 20 14 Asa Gray Award recipient.
In 2006. Drs. Barbara D. Webster and Susan V. Webster established the Grady L. Webster Award
to honor the work of the ir husband and father. respective ly. Th is is a rotating award that is presented in
alternate years by the ASPT and the BSA. At the Botany 2014 meeting . the Grady L. Webster Plan t
Systematics Publicatio n Award was presented by AS PT to Kristen Hascnstab -Lehman und Dr. Michael
S impson for their paper in Snrenuuic 801cmy 3701. The next Webs ter Aw ard given by ASPT wi ll be at
the 2016 meet ing .
